Music Genre Mood Board

College Magazine Evaluation

The first problem I encountered was that the picture I chose for the background image had the model on the wrong side for the more conventional Left Third Coverlines. It would have been fine the less conventional Right Third Coverlines, but as mentioned, they are less conventional, and usually rare to find. To overcome this problem, I horizontally flipped the image in Photoshop.

I think I used House Styles effectively; I used the Comic Sans MS throughout the entire cover, which shows consistency. I also used the same font colours (Black and White) for the Coverlines, but this did not turn out so well for all of the Coverlines, as some of the words were hard to read.

I also think I used a Splash effectively to show an offer included inside, which is relevant to students, because money off of anything is always good, especially for those who are lower down in their jobs, earning less.

Front Cover Layout Mockup

Existing College Magazine Analysis (LIIAR: Part A)

The target audience could be a range of groups from about 15-21, because it mentions the girl who is 15 and pregnant, but then it also mentions someone who likes beer, which to be legal; he needs to be at least 18. And then it also mentions SMU’s Campus. University Students tend to refer to their University as an abbreviation, e.g. LAMDA, U. of A. etc. This means that this appeals to both College and University students.

It also appeals to both genders, because it has a big story about Tucker Max, which could relate to guys, where the story of Shailene Woodley would relate to the girls, so it has something aimed for both genders.

Existing College Magazine Analysis (LIIAR: Part I+I+R)

The College would be responsible for printing and distributing this.

This magazine doesn’t show very good messages, morals or values for the College in question, because it mentions a girl being 15 and pregnant, which is never a good thing, no matter what the TV show 16 and Pregnant may show us.

It also mentions someone going to hell, and hoping they have beer there, two things that aren’t ever really particularly tied to good images, hell being where Christians believe those who sin go to, and beer being the most common alcoholic beverage, and quite a cheap, maybe conveying that he isn’t the most well off student on campus.

It also says that you should “Avoid Sleeping Your Way to the Top”, which can make people think that the only reason students are getting the grades they are getting, is because they’re sleeping with their teachers, which is always frowned upon, no matter where you go in society: when you go to University, or get a job, it’s still not a good thing.

Salvia is mentioned. A legal recreational drug that, obviously some students are smoking, because if they weren’t, then it wouldn’t be mentioned. Smoking drugs is never good in society, anywhere you go.
And finally, the model is wearing quite short shorts, which ties into the sleeping around coverline, as short shorts are stereotypically tied into girls who sleep around a lot, e.g. cheerleaders. The way she has her hair as well, also ties into the theme of being popular/sleeping around a lot.

Existing College Magazine Analysis (LIIAR: Part L)

They have the Masthead telling you which magazine it is, this allows current readers to pick it up easily, or alerting possible future readers as to what is contained within along with the font, which is house styled to be either the same, or extremely similar.

Each of the coverlines hooks you into reading more, for example “He Better Hope They Serve Beer in Hell” it makes you wonder what he has done to deserve to go to hell and pulls you in.
The shot also focuses on the girl in the middle, while blurring out the background trees and grass, which could mean that she has something to do with one of the inside stories, or maybe she’s a reporter. Maybe she’s the editor or maybe she has nothing to do with anything. “Read on to find out!” it seems to say.

It was released in “Fall 2009” which tells us that it is a seasonal magazine, not a daily, weekly or even monthly magazine, which means that it is cheaper to produce than one that is weekly or daily, which means they can publish it for free. This convention is commonly used by magazines to allow readers to gauge how long it will be until another edition comes out.

It doesn’t have a selling line, or Anchorage, which a lot of magazines have, which could be a downside in the way that they can only sell themselves by using the name “College”.

The red top could link to the House Style because it’s the same sort of red as the Masthead.

The “i<3smu” on the girl’s top links to one of the coverlines, which states that there is someone called “Nastia Liukin on SMU’s Campus” which means that she could be this Miss Liukin, kindling the readers interest again, and hooking them further in.

Magazine Cover Conventions

These are some of the conventions of a magazine cover, but not all.

Preliminary Task

Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionaly, you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
